Comprehensive Glossary of Heating & Air Conditioning Terms.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| IAQ | Abbreviation for (Indoor Air Quality). An overall measure, from the human point of view, of temperature, humidity, chemical pollutants, biological contaminants, movement and sensory qualities (such as fresh smell) of indoor air. As homes are being built to "tighter" standards, IAQ has become more important as an issue. In addition to proper air conditioning, advanced air filtration and ventilation are two of the keys to better indoor air quality. |
| ICM | Abbreviation for (Integrally Controlled Motor). A variable-speed motor that operates at low RPM when possible for efficiency and quiet operation. ICM motors are more than 90% efficient versus 60% efficiency for conventional motors. |
| Ignition | The lighting of a fuel to make it burn. |
| Indoor Coil | Also referred to as (Evaporator Coil). Refrigerant containing portion of a fan coil unit similar to a car radiator, typically made of several rows of copper tubing with aluminum fins. |
| Indoor/Outdoor System | Also referred to as (Split System). The combination of an outdoor unit (air conditioner or heat pump) with an indoor unit (furnace or air handler). Split systems must be matched for optimum efficiency. |
| Insulation | As it applies to air conditioning and heating, any material that slows down the transfer of heat. In homes and buildings, insulation is commonly used in attics, walls, and under floors. Also used in electrical and other types of wiring. |
